No official age limit, typically taken by students aged 16 and above.

Types of TOEFL

TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) :

The most widely accepted version, administered online.

TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test) :

TOEFL Exam Pattern

The TOEFL iBT is divided into four sections :

Reading

  • Duration : 54 – 72 minutes.
  • Tasks         
    3 – 4 academic progress (700 words each).
    30 – 40 questions.
  • Skills Assessed : Understanding main ideas, details and speaker intent.

Listening

    • Duration : 41 – 57 minutes.
    • Tasks         
      3 – 4 lectures (3 – 5 minutes each) with 6 questions per lecture.
      2 – 3 conversations (3 minutes each) with 5 questions per conversation.
  • Skills Assessed : Understanding main ideas, details and speaker intent.

Speaking

  • Duration : 17 minutes.
  • Tasks : 4 tasks, including independent and integrated speaking.
  • Skills Assessed : Fluency, clarity, and the ability to express ideas in English.

Writing

  • Duration : 50 minutes.
  • Tasks :
    1 integrated task (20 minutes) : Based on a reading and listening passage.
    1 independent task (30 minutes) : Opinion-based essay.
  • Skills Assessed : Coherence, grammar, and vocabulary.

TOEFL Syllabus

Reading

Academic texts on topics like science, history, and the arts.

Listening

Lectures, conversations, and academic discussions.

Speaking

Expressing opinions, summarizing information, and integrated speaking tasks.

Writing

Summarizing information from passages and lectures, and expressing personal opinions.

Marks Pattern

  • Scoring Range : 0 - 120 (30 points per section).
  • Score Breakdown :
  • Reading : 0 - 30
  • Listening : 0 - 30
  • Speaking : 0 - 30
  • Writing : 0 - 30
  • Final Score : The sum of the four sections.
  • Proficiency Levels :
  • Reading and Listening :High (22 - 30), Intermediate (15 - 21), and Low (0 - 14).
  • Speaking :Good (26 - 30), Fair (18 - 25), Limited (10 - 17), and Weak (0 - 9).
  • Writing : Good (24 - 30), Fair (17 - 23), and Limited (1 - 16).

Mode of Exam

  • TOEFL iBT : Administered online at test centers or at home (Home Edition).
  • TOEFL PBT : Paper-based, available in specific locations.

Fee Structure

  • Fee in India : Approx ₹15,580 - ₹17,630 (varies by location).
  • Additional Fees :
  • Late registration : ₹3,280
  • Score review : ₹6,560 per section
  • Additional score reports : ₹1,640 each

Test Procedure

Before the Test :

  • Registration : Connect with our Experts.
  • Preparation : Utilize ETS's official preparation materials, including practice tests.

On Test Day :

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Present a valid ID (passport is preferred).
  • Follow the instructions provided by the test administrators.

After the Test :

  • Scores are available online within 6 days.
  • Official score reports can be sent to up to 4 institutions for free.
